Cimarron County Farm and Ranch Show

USCP representative Morgan Newsom attended the Cimarron County Farm & Ranch Show in Boise City, Okla. on January 12, 2010, where she reported having very informative conversations with several producers from that area. The main concerns in the Panhandle of Oklahoma are the lack of rainfall and the burden of sand burrs. The USCP is currently funding research projects to increase yields in areas such as this. DuPont is expected to introduce a new over-the-top herbicide in 2011 to control weed populations, such as sand burrs, in sorghum fields. USCP is also involved in studies to develop drought tolerant sorghum hybrids to increase yield in dry areas. Morgan also reported on conversations with several elevators in the area, where she learned that even elevators who typically don’t handle sorghum capitalized on its benefits this year.
