The Sorghum Checkoff will be at Commodity Classic in Anaheim, California, February 27 - March 1. Commodity Classic is an opportunity for producers and industry professionals to learn about new developments in the commodity world from advancements in technology to educational sessions and best-management practices. Sorghum Checkoff staff will be on hand to answer any questions you might have about sorghum, to pass out sorghum recipe samples and to provide updates on exciting developments in the industry. Below are a few highlights that will continue to positively impact sorghum growers in the coming year.

Sorghum Checkoff Celebrates 10 Years

The United Sorghum Checkoff Program is celebrating 10 years of operation in 2018. From developing new markets like aquaculture and baijiu to expanding sorghum use in traditional markets like ethanol and livestock feed, the Sorghum Checkoff is committed to creating market opportunity for producers. Crop improvement remains an important area to the Sorghum Checkoff as we invested into projects to develop desired hybrids and streamline the breeding process. The Sorghum Checkoff remains committed to U.S. sorghum farmers, working to bring producer profitability, groundbreaking research and educational resources to sorghum farmers across the country.

Leadership Sorghum

The Sorghum Checkoff is accepting applications for Leadership Sorghum Class IV, a program designed to develop the next generation of sorghum leaders. During the 15-month leadership program, class members will be exposed to various aspects of the sorghum industry in addition to personal development and networking opportunities. Class members will participate in both hands-on and classroom-style learning experiences to gain an understanding of how sorghum moves through the value chain, how checkoffs and stakeholder organizations interact on behalf of the industry and what the future holds for sorghum. Demand for sorghum as a consumer food product continues to grow and strengthen. In 2017, sorghum grew to be included on 1.7 percent of restaurant menus across the U.S., over a 256 percentage increase over the last four years. Sorghum also debuted on popular fast-food restaurant menus such as Chick-fil-A and Papa John's. The Sorghum Checkoff also met with Walmart, the largest U.S. retailer, to discuss opportunities to include sorghum and sorghum products on store shelves, creating increased exposure to consumers. With a growing interest in whole grains, ancient grains and their offered nutritional benefits to consumers, sorghum has an increasing opportunity to to make an impact in both local and international consumer markets.
