Investing in the Future of Biofuels

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has made significant investments in sorghum over the last two years. In December 2016, the DOE announced an additional $6.4 million investment to study sorghum roots under the Rhizosphere Observations Optimizing Terrestrial Sequestration program. Other 2016 DOE investments included a $30 million commitment for sorghum to be researched as a model feedstock through the Transportation Energy Resources from Renewable Agriculture (TERRA) program. To show their support of this effort, sorghum farmers invested $500,000 in the TERRA program in 2016.

Combating the Sugarcane Aphid

The Sorghum Checkoff board of directors invested $300,000 into sugarcane aphid research in 2016, bringing total sugarcane aphid investments in the past two years to $650,000. The Sorghum Checkoff, Dow AgroSciences and Bayer CropScience hosted the second Sorghum - Sugarcane Aphid Research Exchange Meeting in January, where nearly 60 researchers presented the findings of research conducted throughout 2016. Going into the 2017 growing season, the Sorghum Checkoff is committed to helping producers continue to combat this unwelcome pest while improving crop and management practices.
