Sorghum Promotion in Nebraska
USCP Marketing Director, Florentino Lopez, traveled to Nebraska during the week of January 18 -22, to assist Alvaro Cordero of the U.S. Grains Council and Barbara Kliment of the Nebraska Sorghum Association with Nebraska’s Annual Sorghum Cropping Profitability Seminars. These seminars are sponsored by the Nebraska Sorghum Association and are intended to educate producers on international and domestic marketing opportunities as well as USCP progress and results of recently completed research projects. Producers also heard presentations on weed control and the value of forage sorghum as feed for beef cattle. Additionally, experts gave reports about best management practices, over-the-top herbicide resistant sorghum and comparisons of water usage in sorghum. During their trip to Nebraska, Florentino and Alvaro had the opportunity to visit multiple grain elevators. They also visited Chief Ethanol Fuels, in Hastings, Neb. that has used sorghum in the past and is showing interest in the crop again. Florentino reported that they were very positive about their use of sorghum and felt it has been a benefit in the past. Florentino said it is through visits like these that end users will better understand the value of sorghum to their industry, therefore, increasing the bottom line for American producers.
