Sorghum Checkoff Adopts New Strategic Plan

After 10 years working on behalf of U.S. sorghum farmers, the Sorghum Checkoff set out to adopt and implement a new strategic plan in hopes of leading the way to a better, more profitable industry. In order to keep sorghum relevant, the board of directors saw a need for greater focus on adding value through market development. With a new strategic focus, the Sorghum Checkoff board of directors and staff will seek to provide leadership and be a catalyst for positive change for sorghum producers going forward. The board of directors voted to accept the new strategic plan at the annual board meeting in Lubbock, Texas, Dec. 10-12, 2018. The new strategic plan will act as a road map for the future of U.S. sorghum by establishing a new mission, vision and purpose, as well as a new set of core values. Return on investment for farmers will continue to be a primary consideration, and the Sorghum Checkoff will implement transparency to foster integrity and trust throughout the entire value-chain.

Sorghum Smart Talk Podcast

The Sorghum Checkoff launched a joint podcast with National Sorghum Producers on Oct. 8 to feature valuable information about grain marketing but also to expand beyond that with resources relating to the sorghum industry and the national sorghum producer organizations. The Sorghum Checkoff’s goal with this new platform is to reach a larger audience and provide timely tools to both producers and industry stakeholders. The "Sorghum Smart Talk" podcast was designed specifically with farmers in mind, allowing the Checkoff and NSP to create content using experts to meet the information needs of sorghum producers and agriculturalists across the nation. Sorghum Revs Up New Partnerships to Promote Ethanol

With current international market realities, ethanol is critically important to the sorghum industry. As a result, the Sorghum Checkoff has revved up efforts to promote increased demand for E15 fuel, or 15 percent blends of ethanol. The Sorghum Checkoff and Texas Grain Sorghum Board began their relationship with NASCAR driver Austin Wayne Self, his managing partner AM Racing and GO TEXAN in the fall of 2017, and the partnership reached new heights last season. The Sorghum Checkoff also sponsored NASCAR driver Matt Tifft for a race in Kansas in partnership with American Ethanol and Growth Energy. Ethanol has fueled over 12-million NASCAR miles in vehicles reaching speeds of up-to-200 miles per hour, and as the largest market for sorghum in the U.S., ethanol use will remain a strategic focus of the Sorghum Checkoff. Sorghum Trade Promotion & Partnerships

The Sorghum Checkoff works closely with the U.S. Grains Council (USGC) and others to expand market opportunities, ultimately tightening overall supply and demand. Increased interest in the crop has been demonstrated by several countries within recent months. Within the past nine months, the Checkoff, USGC and state organizations have worked together to host trade teams from all over the world including most recently China, Mexico, South America and Australia. The board of directors has also purposely invested in research such as feeding trials including duck feeding, catfish feeding and commercial pet food. Feeding guides for swine, poultry, beef and dairy cattle have also been developed to showcase sorghum's nutritional benefits to end-users. As demand continues to increase internationally, the checkoff seeks to understand the dynamics at work while facilitating relationships and logistics that ultimately result in international purchases. Increasing international demand coupled with a strong domestic demand portfolio will undoubtedly strengthen producer opportunities.
