Sorghum Celebrates Pumpkin Season With Cozy Fall Recipes
The Sorghum Checkoff shares seasonal recipes featuring pumpkin, apples, squash, warm spices and sorghum in several versatile forms.
LUBBOCK, Texas (September 2, 2026) — As pumpkin season arrives and temperatures begin to drop, the United Sorghum Checkoff Program invites home cooks to welcome fall with recipes that showcase the grain’s versatility.
From pumpkin loaf and apple pancakes to a hearty harvest salad, sorghum can add flavor and texture to breakfast, dinner, dessert and seasonal entertaining. These recipes feature sorghum as flour, whole grain and syrup alongside familiar fall ingredients.
Sorghum offers more than seasonal flavor. Whole grain sorghum contributes fiber and plant-based protein while providing a versatile foundation for nutrient-rich fall favorites such as pumpkin, apples and squash. Together, they create satisfying meals that bring more flavor, texture and nutrition to the table.
“Fall gives home cooks an opportunity to pair sorghum with pumpkin, apples, squash and the warm spices people crave this time of year,” said Lanier Dabruzzi, MS, RD, LD, director of nutrition and food innovation for the Sorghum Checkoff. “Sorghum’s versatility makes it easy to incorporate into recipes throughout the day.”
The Sorghum Checkoff recommends these recipes for the season:
- Sorghum Pumpkin Loaf With Sorghum Brown Sugar Cream Cheese Frosting — Pumpkin puree, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and cloves bring classic fall flavor to this loaf made with sorghum flour and syrup. A sorghum brown sugar cream cheese frosting finishes the seasonal dessert.
- Sorghum Fall Harvest Salad With Sorghum Syrup Dressing — Whole grain sorghum, roasted butternut squash, crisp apple, pecans and cranberries create a hearty fall salad finished with a tangy-sweet sorghum syrup dressing.
- Sorghum Apple Pie Pancakes — Apples and warm spices bring the flavor of apple pie to the breakfast table. These pancakes offer a seasonal twist for crisp weekend mornings.
- Invisible Sorghum Apple Cake — Thinly sliced apples, whole grain sorghum flour and almonds come together in a gluten-free take on a classic apple cake.
- Sorghum Old Fashioned Cocktail — Bourbon, bitters and sorghum syrup create a rich, subtly sweet cocktail suited for fall gatherings and cool evenings.
