Best Source for Sorghum Questions

Brent Bean, Sorghum Checkoff Director of Agronomy

As we wrap up another growing season, the fall and winter months are usually a time for reflection of the past and making plans for 2027. If you are considering sorghum, and I fully admit to my bias here, there is no better place to go than the United Sorghum Checkoff Program (USCP) website. All of the information compiled on the website has been developed by USCP staff who are world leaders in their particular discipline.

The website can be found by simply searching for sorghumcheckoff.com. At the top of the page, there are five tabs: Farmers, Consumers, Industry, Sustainability and Sorghum 101. Placing your cursor over any of these tabs opens a menu with a list of pages related to that topic. The Consumer tab, for example, has links to a wealth of information on nutrition, recipes, where to buy sorghum products, health resources, pets and more.

For information on growing sorghum and the many management decisions that go into producing a successful crop, the Farmers tab will be the most useful. It includes pages on Grain Production, Insects, Weeds and Diseases, Forage Production, Agronomy Insights, Sorghum Economics and Leadership Sorghum. One of the most viewed pages can be found under Grain Production by scrolling down and finding the link titled Growth and Development. Here you will find photos of the various growth stages of sorghum and a discussion on key management decisions that will impact the crop at each stage.

Agronomy Insights would be my most recommended page for growers if I had to choose only one. There are over 75 articles on just about any topic you can think of related to growing sorghum. These include articles related to Preplanting and Planting Considerations (seeding rates, row spacing, etc.), Sorghum Hybrids, Soil Fertility and Fertilization, Weed, Insect and Disease Control, Irrigation and Water Use, Double Cropping, Forage Silage and Grazing, among others.

This winter, as you prepare for the 2027 crop year and are looking for some specific information on sorghum, or just want to read up on the crop, consider browsing the USCP website for some easily accessible and useful insights.
